Simple And Easy Homemade Donut Recipe From Scratch

Jump to Recipe

I don’t know about you and your crew, but mine really loves donuts. I’m talking my three year old asks for donuts almost every single day. No lie!

And well since we moved to the country I had to step up my mom game if I ever wanted my kids to have fresh baked donuts. So I ordered us our very first donut pan. The first time I used it I just used cake mix. My kids liked it but weren’t to happy with it. Like it was good but it wasn’t great.

Well this one I made and they were in LOVE! “It’s so goooood!” So I knew I had to share what I did and used.

Your donut pan should come with a couple of variations to try. And I encourage you to. But also feel free to tweak along the way to what you think it might need.

Now on to how to make these kid approved super easy delicious donuts!

SPECIAL ITEMS NEEDED

A donut pan. I purchased mine from amazon. It makes 9 donuts and is silicone. It also passes the pinch test. When donuts have cooled some I just flip it over and they all plop right out.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE DONUTS:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

FOR THE GLAZE

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Optional: food coloring red and blue
  • Optional: Sprinkles

DIRECTIONS

MAKE THE DONUTS:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • In a large bowl whisk together all the dry ingredients
    (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt)
  • In a small bowl whisk together the wet ingredients
    (egg, milk, butter, vanilla extract)
  • Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until all flour clumps are gone
  • Spoon the mixture into your greased donut pan filling about 3/4 full. Do not over fill and cover the center pivot.
  • Place pan in the oven for 18-22 mins
  • Insert a wooden toothpick when done to ensure it is fully done. NO wet batter should be on your toothpick when you remove it.
  • When done allow to cool but still remain warm

MAKE THE GLAZE:

  • In a medium bowl mix together all the ingredients
(powdered sugar, vanilla extract and salt)

MAKE THE COLORED GLAZE:

  • Place about 2 spoonfuls into 2 different snack size ziplock bags. Be sure to use less than half the glaze
  • Place 3 drops of blue food coloring into one bag and 6 drops of red food coloring on the other bag
  • Seal the bags and mix up
  • Squeeze the bottom corner of the bag to empty it and cut off the corner. Start smaller and trim more if your need to. this will be how you drizzle the colors onto your donuts

APPLYING GLAZE TO DONUTS

  • Pour the rest of the glaze into the middle of a medium sized plate
  • Hold your donut upside down and swirl the top into the glaze mixture making sure to get a good amount on it to drip down the sides
  • Place onto a plate and let sit for a few minutes
  • Take your colored glazed and slightly squeeze going back and forth to draw lines across the top of your donuts. Repeat with 2nd color
  • Quickly place any sprinkle on before the glaze dries
  • Allow to sit for about 5 minutes and enjoy your warm home baked donuts
